A world of possibilities,
made real.

From a self-started family-tech product to digital publishing for medieval manuscripts. Two projects shaped by very different needs.

CaWaHub

A more considered way for children to explore online video. Adult-curated Green Lists, family viewing controls, and shared tools for schools and groups put guidance at the heart of discovery. I built CaWaHub independently and hope to pilot it in a school, then learn where it can go next.

The approach

Great work starts
with understanding.

Some ideas start with a problem I want to solve; others take shape with the people who will use them. Either way, the best technology starts with understanding.

01

Start with a problem worth solving.

I look for the real need behind an idea, whether it comes from my own curiosity or grows through conversations with its future users.

02

Build around real people.

Design and development come together in clear interfaces, thoughtful details, and the right tools for the job — without complexity for its own sake.

03

Make room to learn and grow.

Careful testing and a considered launch leave something understandable and maintainable, with room to learn from people using it and decide what comes next.

I bring a developer's experience and a scholar's curiosity to ideas worth building.

I'm Steven Hampton, the person behind Gull Island Digital. I've worked in software development around the world for over 25 years, using a broad range of technologies and platforms.

Alongside my work in technology, I hold a PhD in European Literature and have worked as a lecturer and tutor in the field. My academic interests span medieval history and literature, and I particularly enjoy projects that bring learning, culture and technology together.

I enjoy making complex things approachable — from building CaWaHub as an independent product to creating a digital home for centuries-old manuscripts. I'm especially drawn to ideas that bring learning, culture and technology together.

From first idea to working product, I stay close to the details.
